Eddie Stack, a terrific writer and friend, says, By the way, do you know that ‘dig’ is an Irish word? It comes from ‘tuig’ which means to understand, to ‘get it’….it’s also used as ‘twig’ as in “I twigged something was wrong’

“Dig”, comes from the Irish “tuig” meaning to understand, but it evolved in New York street argot to mean “to become aware of, to understand, to know and to enjoy.
