“Are you familiar with Kundalini yoga?” he suddenly said. I admitted that I was not. “If you abstain from physical pleasures, especially sex” – he took a quick drag of a joint and held it for a moment, exhaling thick smoke into the dimly lit living room -  “there’s this substance at the base of the spine” – he coughed and passed me the joint – “it’s like a tightly wound up coil.” I took a small puff, struggling to make sense of his disjointed talk. “If you fast and stay celibate for a long time,” John continued, “It uncoils and shoots up the spinal column.” I passed what was left of the joint, and John took another hit before resuming his rambling monologue.
“You can achieve different levels of spiritual awareness depending on how high this fluid goes up your spine, you see.” I nodded. “If you abstain from food and sex for long enough,” John said with mounting enthusiasm, “this stuff shoots all the way up into your head – and that’s where you become clairvoyant!”

How sad….
